Explaining My Most Viral Reel: How to Look Sexy

I had the honor to be with Jasmine Castillo from Noize PolluZion to talk about how we as average-looking people, compare ourselves to models, and more! We truly do not know or understand the hardships all these beautiful people go through to look the way they do, and how blessed they are to have it. Instead, we feel bad about ourselves for not being or looking similar to all of these models and end up beating ourselves down.

Part of this talk was inspired by my most viral Reel on Instagram: How to Look Sexy. You can listen to our full talk right from the beginning. We definitely talked a lot more than just this one simple Reel.

Our Love for Sports

Before we begin, let us talk about Jasmine’s and my love for sports. She is a vegan runner while I am a judo practitioner. Both sports require a lot of calories and can be extremely tiresome. It is amazing, isn’t it? Two women of color, navigating fitness when we are mostly ignored by the industry itself.

For both of us, we started exercising and doing sports mostly for our health, and not necessary for how we look. I think that is how we both can keep being active despite the stress and inconveniences that come our way. We are not comparing ourselves to other people, including friends or even celebrities. We are not trying to search for the secret of “how to look sexy.” The drive comes within, not outside.

What people say about my most viral reel: How to Look Sexy

Let us jump into my most viral Reel: How to Look to Sexy. To be honest, it was not my intention to go viral this way. I was simply reacting to a model and the background instructions. It was so simple, you can see it right here.

What is happening in the prompt, “How to Look Sexy,” a voice will show you the exact step-by-step way the model uses to look gorgeous. Side by side, I was compared to her. As you can guess, my results did not look as good.

Most comments were sympathetic. They were talking about how we should not compare ourselves to models, how we are beautiful in our own ways, and how we should not be thinking this way. Then, there were also the negative comments.

One surprising thing is, all of these negative comments are from men. Don’t believe me? Check out the comment section on my Instagram Reel. They were telling me to lose weight or hit the gym. I mean, do these people know who I am?

The problem is, I have a natural circle face, like a perfect circle. When I look straight into the camera, that roundness shows up like me “being fat.” Am I overweight? No. Do I look “thin” in the Reel? Yes.

The models don’t look gorgeous every day

The thing is, what people do not realize is that even models, do not look amazing every single day. They are humans as well. And just like us, they have their ups and downs.

Yes, in the Reel, I am miles away from looking as “perfect” as the model. It is also not her fault to be gifted with such beauty. At the same, we do not know how she feels and looks day-to-day.

Instagram is marketing, even if you do not sell anything. Everyone puts a perfect narrative of themselves out there for everyone to see. This model in our example obviously has chiseled out her perfect expressions, making things look easier than they should be.

During our chat, Jasmine agreed with me that there are a few “above average” people who look extremely beautiful. The rest of, the “average people” comprise normal-looking people with some flaws here and there. And there is no shame in that.

That is why, like I said at the beginning, the reason both Jasmine and I can keep being active as we are, is because we do not compare ourselves to other people. We are content with what we are blessed to have.

What I am talking about is not the “there are kids not eating in Africa” type of thinking. I am alluding to your unconscious mind which drives the majority of your emotions and actions. By bringing your unconsciousness up, it can become much easier to deal with your feeling of comparitis *hehe*.
