No Shortcut to Success: anti-MLM Podcast Episode

I had the honor to be on the Spill It with Marcus to talk about judging the pictures we see online and how predatory MLM companies can be. It is all about how we can guard ourselves against the feeling of inadequacy and save our money as we go through our fitness journey. We had a lot of fun chatting about no shortcut to success, i.e., current events and how we view MLM as scams. No lies here. By the end of this, you can see that this is an anti-MLM podcast episode. If you’re curious about this topic, feel free to read along for the summary.

We started our chat with a fun little game. You should check out the episode here.

The Health Dangers of Social Media

Marcus began our talk by asking how I felt when I was bigger and looking at all kinds of pictures on social media, especially Instagram.

Predictably, I did not like how I looked or felt. I would pinch my belly and try to flatten my face to make myself look a little “better.” It was a stupid move because, in the end, it did not really matter.

Why? Because of face filters that are readily available nowadays. You can make yourself look completely different from real life with a click of a button. Even videos can have filters now. You cannot trust what you see online is the real face of the person posting it.It would not make you feel so great when you are constantly looking at these impossible pictures … will it? Skip to minute 28:05 for our conversation. Remember, these filters are deception that shows the lies of shortcut to success.

What Can We Do to Combat these Dangers?

Continuing with our chat, Marcus mentioned new rules in some European countries requiring influencers to clarify filters in their posts. Even Instagram is considering having a “clean” hashtag.

The thought is well-meaning. You will be able to see precisely what creates the magic (i.e., your shortcut to success) online. But, how is it enforceable? With the power and magnitude of influence that Instagram (and other social media) has, will people be looking for these small clarifications? Have you ever noticed them on posts?

Unfortunately, your realities have already been shifted by the use of filters. How will the new regulations make a difference? I recently had a Reel that went viral on Instagram, garnering over 6K likes. Of course, there are so many supportive comments, but there were also toxic opinions, as you can predict. (You can watch the video here).

The Health Dangers of MLM and Why This Is an Anti-MLM Podcast Episode

We shifted our conversation more into its title, No Shortcut to Success. With our current trend of working from home, so many multi-level marketing companies (MLM companies) are popping up on all social media channels. And they are incredibly annoying. They are promising the exact shortcut to success that many are desperately looking for.

MLM has many exclusions for health problems that do not occur directly through the use of their product. Problems can occur from poor diet and exercise and lack of proper overall health. The people propagating their message do not have a deep understanding of what they are spreading. Based on this podcast, MLMs are not logical or even helpful. You can check out minute 34:48 for the deeds.

“I’m going to call them for what they are. They are scams.” – Marcus

Marcus had no hesitation in calling MLM companies scams, which I agree to an extent. You see, not all people doing MLM are bad. MLM companies provide a lucrative income source, and they all want a piece of the pie. It is a super easy “shortcut to success.” Stay home, make your own schedule, and create an income using social media. Unfortunately, these people do not understand what they are doing (by selling dieting pills or patches). Instead, they become customers for the MLM companies by buying too much stock.

At the end of the podcast, Marcus proposed a step you could do to avoid these deceptive companies, coming back to our anti-MLM podcast episode. Look for certifications from potential fitness coaches whom you want to hire. In the UK, they should belong to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). Coaches in the US should have certifications from one Gold Standard certification (i.e., ACSM or CSCS and more).

I say this again and again, there is no shortcut to success <( ‵□′)> and you better believe.
