I got an idea to write about this “ugly” part of the industry that I am in from Chelsea of The Financial Diet who did a video essay that summarizes what the diet industry won’t tell you and how it affects your money.

There is a big problem with the diet industry. So many people online propagate false knowledge about food and how it can impact fitness. They are also guilty of lying that their products are the only way to lose weight and stay healthy. However, this is not the truth. There are other ways to lose weight and stay healthy, not just through dieting.

Chelsea’s Biggest Complaint about the Diet Industry

In her video on The Financial Diet YouTube channel, Weight Loss, “Eating Clean,” & How The Diet Industry Hijacked Our Finances, Chelsea mentions that the diet industry has been moving away from the weight loss culture and implementing more body positivity when reaching out to prospective clients but still being fatphobic.

Despite being less overt about weight, the diet industry still loudly talks about the insecurities we feel about our weight and our desire to change our bodies to fit into a certain image. This observation is true.

I agree with Chelsea that being healthy has simple weight loss guidelines in theory. All you need to do is to make lifestyle changes, eat clean, increase your physical activity level, sleep well, and more.

However, it can be tough to do all of these things on your own. Even if you are a fitness enthusiast, you may not have all the answers to the questions. Of course, many of the problems we see are systemic, or what we experts call the built-in environment. I disagree with Chelsea here, it doesn’t mean that you can make a change for yourself.

Instead of listening to the diet industry, why don’t you try and figure out what type of exercise works best for you before you start? (^人^)

A built-in environment is what you choose to surround yourself with. Think about the neighborhood where you live, your workplace, your social circles, and more.

Much of America is experiencing an obesity epidemic, especially in food desert areas. If you live in a food desert, your built-in environment does not have access to quality grocery stores, which makes living healthy much harder.

The diet industry wont tell you when you are living in this built-in environment, healthy meals to lose weight are not going to happen. Period. Forget about the keto diet, PE diet, Atkins diet, or any other diet that has a name.

Your built-in environment prevents you from having the ability to change your situation. The thing is, there are still actions you can take instead of letting things go.

You can let yourself go or you can take the harder route to accomplish outside of what is expected of you.

You might be familiar with the vicious cycle of attempting to lose weight, if you are the few who are successful, will statically regain all of your lost weight. You are then the most lucrative subject of the diet industry.

But what if you change the way you view yourself and live healthy as a whole? I think you can do it. Do what you can throughout the day and know that even though you may be sedentary now, you can do it.

The diet industry won’t let you do that. Sure, weightloss clinic is not on-trend right now, but multi-level marketing and bogus health claims are thriving. To combat all of this, Chelsea recommends her viewers to make a change that they are comfortable with, feel comfortable and vibrance in their bodies, so they are free to do what they need to do in life.

I completely agree with her take. You should start your fitness journey by setting small goals, ideally using the SMART Principles. Track your progress as you move along and keep yourself accountable.
